Dr. Phil & Robin!!

I have been asked several times to blog about my appearance on Dr. Phil and I've hesitated but after thinking about it, I've decided that I will. A lot of you who know me, already know the story, but for those of you reading this blog who happened upon it, here goes.

In September of 2015, I was watching The Dr. Phil show one afternoon, and his wife Robin was on there talking about her foundation, When Georgia Smiled, and how they help women, men and children who live in and want to get out of domestic violence situations. (I'll provide a link below to Robin's site if you would like to read more about it or give a charitable donation.)

She proceeded to talk about a contest in which you could win an overnight trip to Los Angeles, watch a taping of The Dr. Phil Show and walk off stage with her and her husband during their signature walkoff. If any of you don't know, since day one of the show, Dr. Phil goes to the audience at the end of every show, takes Robin by the hand and they go off camera together. That was going to be part of the prize. So for every $10.00 donation you gave on her website, you got one entry. I immediately gave my ten dollars and never thought another thing of it.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month and they had several shows dedicated to it. I went on about my life, and was in the process of moving back to WV from VA, when I got an email informing me that I was on ten finalists and they needed to do a Skype interview with me. I called and scheduled it for that night and patiently waited for the call. After about fifteen minutes of speaking with the individuals who were in charge, I was told that I was not really a finalist and that I had been chosen at random as the grand prize winner and to pack my bags!! I almost lost my breath. At first I thought I'd heard the lady wrong and I felt confused for a second, but the more she talked, the more I realized that my life was about to change. Over the next couple of days, I signed confidentiality agreements and was ordered to tell NO ONE. I didn't say a word and kept quiet. Over the next couple of weeks, I spoke with them on a near daily basis, trying to line up the trip and in doing so, I was asked what prompted me to give to her charity. I told them my story of surviving domestic violence and they asked if I could tell my story on the show. After much thought and hesitation, I decided that maybe my story could help someone else to get out of a bad situation. My son and I were flown to LA, put up in The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, treated like VIP's, given drivers and limos for the week, given food, and money, and attended the taping of a show then I was on my show. I was given clothes and jewelry and a pair of very expensive Christian Dior shoes that were custom made to match Robin's. We have the only two pair in the world like them. They are gorgeous and I felt like Cinderella when they brought them to me. Let me tell you that Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw are the nicest human beings that you could ever want to meet. They were so good to me and my son, and they did things for us behind the scenes that they could have used on air to make themselves look great in the public eye, but didn't. What they did came from the heart. Just wonderful people. Robin still contines to communicate with me and she will always be a friend to me. She is an amazing woman and I'm so happy that I've had the priviledge of knowing her and Dr. Phil.

At the end of the show, I was presented with a brand new 2016 Dodge Dart, bright red. It was the surprise of a lifetime and I cried so hard. I was in shock when I saw it with the big red bow on it. That car has been such a blessing to me.

I'll attach some pictures from the show and from Dr. Phil and Robin's Twitter accounts. They are just so lovely and I can't wait to see them again. You can find the clips from my show on YouTube if you'd like to watch them. Just go to YouTube and type in Dr. Phil Christy Adams and all three clips will come up. Also, visit the websites that I've attached to learn more about domestic violence or to donate to her charity.
